Katie Confesses: Hormones Are Boss

I’ve been writing this blog in my head for the past few months.  What to say, what not.  Tell all or just ham it up with all sorts of reality checks I’ve been faced with over the past year…well, the past 25 years.  Yesterday, I brought the vast majority of this blog together while on a GRUELING 4 mile run.  Ok, jog.  ‘Grueling,’ sure, maybe that’s a little dramatic, but today I can hardly walk. Shit you not.  *I’ll thank this tune for getting me home.

KatieHormone_ccIt’s been a humbling couple of years.  The wheels are a little rusty, to say the least. Yesterday, at mile 1.75 I wanted to stop. Pretty much put the kibosh on the idea of running and just walk.  It hurt.  This all after finishing a couple marathons and a handful of halfs and still, I might say, can teach a kick ass spin class, so I still got {some of} it.  I could, at one time, jog for miles.  Nowadays I don’t aspire to run much, but I just wanted to lace ’em up for old times sake.  My core?  Well that’s sorta none existent.  My glutes = not firm. Nope, not even one of them.  I’m a Functional Nutritionist who’s been a little less than functional from time to time.

When I was 15 years old I spent some time in calorie deprivation with disordered eating.  It was weird, it just happened.  I remember shopping with my Mom, looking in the mirror and thinking – what on earth?!  It was a fairly short stint in that arena (the being too thin part) and I was ready to eat once again.  I remember being thrilled to have a free pass to eat.  Anything and everything because, well, I needed it.   That’s when the trouble began, my metabolism had tanked, but even more important, my understanding of food, portions, and all that went with it was gone.   Frankly it had never existed, but it didn’t really need to prior to that. Seventy new pounds later, there I was.

Fast forward and from 15-25 I was in the ether.  The ether of health.  I’ve always been so enthralled with food, nutrition, and fitness.  Never an athlete and born with my grandma’s knees (less than shapely – sorry G’ma!), it was about finding my own best balance.  KEY WORD: balance.  And I did.  It wasn’t always easy but as I rounded the corner in my late 20’s I started to fit my own bod.  Feeling good. Looking pretty a-ok.  In fact, it started to become a passion, this new understanding that food = energy, and that what we eat actually becomes us. I craved the feeling that good health gave me, and I wanted to share it, so I entered the world of professional nutrition and fitness. Things had really fallen into place.

Enter Summer of 2014.  Helloooo.  Here it is, reality check time.  Starting your own business, even with the BEST of partners, is nothing short of stressful.  You know, working night and day, trouble sleeping, eating at weird times or even not eating, and of course getting insanely excited and then insanely scared – all within five minutes. And THAT is exactly what knocked me right off balance, and welcomed this new layer right in the old midsection.

KatieHormone_2You, my uninvited friend, are not welcome.  I have Hashimotos (autoimmune thyroiditis) so my inner engine is at a disadvantage to begin with, but for years I’ve kept it in check with a clean diet and good exercise.  Nowadays, that sucker is all whack.  What else is whack?  The nearly 15 pounds I’ve added on over the past 18 months.  Wait. A. Minute.  You start a nutrition company and gain 15 pounds? What the… Let me tell you this: I disclose for the very reason that I am just like you.  I get it, and I too need to be reminded of how important it is to shut down, breathe and stretch, and how other systems are at play here.  Health and wellness is more than just food.  We are not lying when we say that. It is the sum of all things, of which food is merely one {albeit huge} key player.


This isn’t Prescribe Nutrition’s fault.  It’s mine.  It’s knowing so much and thinking somehow that because I know, it won’t happen to me.  This Winter of the ‘Frozen Tundra’ (so affectionately named for the crazy cold that was Minnesota 2014) had me on my ass, doing very little movement, working 12 hours days, baking like a wild woman (sure all gluten-free, dairy-free, and refined sugar-free, but four muffins a day?  C’mon Katie … oh and capping off most nights with a glass (or two) of red wine.  Hey, it was self defense people.  I was cold and tired and adrenal fatigue was the new sheriff in town.  The only thing that was firm was that I was not, and all black was the uniform.  My hormones were on the fritz.


Practice what you preach. I know, I know.  I really, I do… 98% of the time.  I have to say that despite what I’ve told you, it all happened for a reason.  I study hormones on the daily, and my intense passion for nutrition and it’s connectedness to our entire bodies needed to take me for a spin around the block.  I’m a Certified Advanced Hormone practitioner, yet my own hormones think that they are on some joy ride of their own. How ironic. I needed to see that my self care, my sleep (or lack thereof) and my go go GO really did have that crazy impact that we all talk about.  Life happened. And it landed in my stomach.

As I rounded the corner on Spring, listening to Dr. Sara Gottfried’s The Hormone Cure on audio again and I cried (and laughed) through half of it.  THIS IS ME. 35, plus 15 and feeling like this lady needs to get balanced herself. Heyo. Life, health and finding balance – it’s a puzzle.  A giant THOUSAND piece puzzle.  So here I sit, feeling a little vulnerable, wondering what you might think, will you still trust me and hoping that more than anything you can see –  we are you.  We all struggle, we all fall of the horse, we test the waters…it’s life.

    Katie, thanks so much for opening up & being real! I loved this post. So I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s over a year ago & I still feel like I’m fighting a losing battle. I’ve seen three different doctors since then…and they all seem to tell me something different (You MUST go gluten-free, gluten-free will do nothing for you, take THIS thyroid medication, no take THIS one, etc…) it’s incredibly confusing! Right now I’m not really doing anything & I feel blah. Not good!! I think this would be awesome; I’m sure my diet is a huge contributing factor. I’m guessing this is perfectly tailored for someone with Hashi’s since you have it as well??

    Hi Katie! I’m not sure if my last comment went through…it’s not up here on the blog so I guess I’ll try one more time 🙂 I LOVED this post. Thanks for being so real!! I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s over a year ago & since then have seen three different doctors. They all tell me completely different things (so I am totally confused!!) One doctor had me on Armour thyroid, and the next one told me that Armour was dangerous so he switched me to Levothyroxin. Currently, I’m not sure who to believe, so I’m not taking anything. But I feel so blah!! I think this Get Balanced course sounds amazing; I’m guessing it’s perfectly tailored for someone with Hashi’s since you’ve got it as well??

      Hi Jessie! Your comment DID come through! We have to approve them (wha wha) so it just takes a bit. I’m delighted you found some reflection in this post. Without getting too crazy in this reply (cause you bet I could go ON for days about Hashi) that we absolutely talk thyroid in Get Balanced. I can’t tell you that I sure do know how confusing it is to navigate – only to get a zillion opinions. I’m a huge believer in a couple key factors for thyroiditis and gluten free is the one of the golden tickets. Get this – each cell in our body has a thyroid receptor site on it (it’s only this and vitamin d that have this unique characteristic) and because gluten proteins mimic thyroid hormone – eating gluten can literally cause a switchboard overload. I’m so sorry you feel blah – let’s get you feeling better!

    Oh thank you for this! For your honesty and for putting it all out there. You are human and that brutal winter did a number on all of us. I signed up on monday for Get Balanced because my yearly doctor’s visit that morning showed I too am 15 lbs heavier than I expected. (Although in reality I need to lose more like 40 lbs – I’ll take what I can get.) So it was the kick in the butt I needed to take the first step towards (hopefully) getting my head on straight. We WILL do this!

    Hey Katie! I hear ya loud and clear! My business has been booming this year (yay!), but with that comes less exercise. Plus my shoulder has been giving me issues. I’ve been staying religious to my morning walks, but have been running almost 0 the past couple months. I think I’ve gained maybe 5-10 lbs since last summer. This winter SUCKED! So, you’re not alone, I’m going to get back into the swing of fitness and try a 10-week session of kickboxing that starts this Saturday! 🙂

    Keep doing what you’re doing, know that you’re not alone with added weight this year, and I know you can get back to your usual weight/physique in no time. 🙂 Thanks for all you do!

    I love your honesty- I think that your willingness to be brutally honest about yourself makes me trust you MORE! 🙂 bc NONE of us are perfect. I’ve been doing some learning about my body since ending Reset. Wow- i have been gaining and losing weight depending on how many POUNDS of cashews I eat in a week… Lol. Or, I tried some (ALOT) of GF brownies on 4th of July weekend and realized what an unfriendly sensation high sugar MUST give to my unmentionables….. Agh! We are perfectly imperfect:) I wish I was doing it with you, bc I just CANT get enough info from you awesome ladies:) (not in a creeper way…. Lol). Ps- it helps to hold u accountable, I think, when u share personal info like that- accountability is key!!!:)

    Thank you for your honesty! Now I can confess that one year ago I signed up to become a health coach to take back my health and help others. Well, here I am one year later and the 70 pounds I gained with my three pregnancies is still on my body. I haven’t started up a practice because I still haven’t lost the weight. Who wants to be coached by someone who looks unhealthy? My health habits have improved but the stress that I have experienced over the last year has taken a toll on my body. I have little knowledge on hormones, so maybe this is the missing piece for me. I am looking forward to giving this course 100 %. Thanks for joining us on the journey and your honesty!

    Good for you, Katie! Not many people would be comfortable enough to put it all out there. My health has been a mess lately. I have lichen sclerosis which is autoimmune but also has a hormonal component and I have problems around my cycle (which is also messed up). Would get balanced be something that could help me with my LS and help regulate my cycle?

      Thanks Becka! It’s not the easiest to get a little ‘raw’ but I’m really happy that it’s allowed such great dialogue here. We need each other to get through it all. Autoimmune – while such a broad category – is such a passion of ours and can be addressed very intensely with food. We dive into the physiology of hormone imbalances and then-some, all during GB. I can’t guarantee (it’s all a process and can have vast roots) but I’m certain you’d benefit greatly! We’d love to have you!

    Katie, I don’t even know what to say. When I glanced at this this morning when I was at work I guess my initial thought was – isn’t it grand to have the freedom to express your truth. And sitting here now I guess that is what I am still thinking. That and it’s just so nice to have company on this food, fuel and health journey we’re all on. I just did the Reset 14 and while I felt like I didn’t prepare as much as I could have, I felt better those two weeks than I have in many months. I loved the forum and all the participants and PN team cheering each other on. As you know I am one that is pretty much ALWAYS looking for more support as I transition to this new way of eating.

    I just love this post Katie and as so many others before me have said it just makes the already fabulous you more fabulous.

    We are not flawed, we are not a work in progress, we just are; bodies and minds in motion one day at time. Bodies and minds that thrive in community, with support. Bravo Katie for not only cheering us on, but for standing alongside of us too. Life is simply so much fuller, richer and more fun when we walk together.

    Katie, I just about cried reading this. But I would be the 50+10lbs that won’t go away, no thyroid for 10 yrs, and now allergic to gluten & dairy, for which after eating dairy this past weekend & not knowing it had such a reaction I begged my internist for Prednisone to make my watering, inflamed & bright red eye lids get some relief. I force myself to barre 3 days a week, do yoga 2x ( I try for 3) eat well and occasionally partake in candy, my down fall. I need your help and will keep my eyes peeled for dates that work. Oh yeah, did I mention peri menopausal? Acceptance is the answer to all my problems…

    It hit me like a ton of bricks.
    I struggle with the very same issues.

    Hi Katy…..LOVE LOVE love this post!!!!! I also have Hashimoto’s and also have a strange looking blob around my waist that I SWEAR wasn’t there last year!! I struggle daily with the deep fatigue but tend to feed it with not such great things (sugar and d. coke) to make it through. I’ve also started a blog business with two partners (sound familiar?) and have spent the last year sitting in front of the computer!! Ugh! 3 kids complicates it further if that is even possible!!! Excuses, I know! This tummy needs to go! Thank you so much for your awesome honesty!! I am a New Rules veteran and, while I am not so good at maintaining, the days in that program early last year were the best I had felt. You girls rock!!!

    Oh boy Katie, can I ever relate to the “frozen tundra” bit! What a wonderful, raw and honest post.     Thanks Katie for a great post. A friend sent it to me because I have been describing the same exact thing. I’ve put on 15 pounds in 18 months. I work out a lot. I eat well. I am mid 40s and living under very stressful conditions- oh yeah, i’ve been having the nightly glass of wine too:) I’ve been really trying to drop this….It was oddly helpful to know someone who does what you do for a living face this. And I’ve been thinking the same thing about hormones.

I know it’s not easy, especially when there are some big uncontrollables. Anything you can do to relieve stress – remember even the smallest of things – can account for some huge strides!
