Orange Julius anyone? The junior high school me would be raising my hand high on this one. Who doesn’t love a sweet smoothie. I mean, we’re smitten at the sound of sweet. But, as many of you know, sweet (aka sugar) is a can ‘o worms that our society has lost its grip on. The term low carb might make your skin crawl. Carbs are not inherently bad, but we’ve lost touch with where they fit in our lives and into our bodies.

Calories, by definition, are units of energy. So, what we consume within those units of energy are crucially important for how our bodies work and how we feel. If you know Prescribe Nutrition, you know that we don’t count calories, but that doesn’t mean we can skip the important elements of what is in our food… what is in are our calories.

As much as we might love a fruit filled smoothie, they aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. Let’s break this shit down. Every recipe on our site includes the magic trio of fat, fiber and protein. Why? Because those three together are a more dense, slow burning fuel source that not only creates more satiety and keeps us energized longer, but also stabilizes our blood sugar. As you might have picked up, you don’t see carbs in that equation. Why’s that? Well because we’ll get carbs through the fat + fiber + protein sources inherently so, really, no need to look for them (unless of course you’re running 18 miles today… ). Carbs are important to our working bodies but the key word here is W O R K-ing. You have to burn them or otherwise get they stored as fat. Repeat: they will be stored as fat. Ah yeah, no thanks. With that said, it’s time to start having real conversations about skipping even natural sugars when we can, and smoothies are the perfect place to start.

Kelly is all about low carb, low sugar smoothies with her FAB FOUR smoothie equation that we refer to all the damn time. This week we are sharing one of our favorites, the Cherry Cacao Be Well Smoothie. It’s all about jamming those fats, proteins, fiber and greens into the recipes and including fruit in small amounts to help you really go the distance. Trust us, and trust Kelly when we say – we’re doing this for you.

Ingredients:

  • 1 serving vanilla protein powder [always go for clean proteins – pea, hemp, grass-fed whey, etc.]
  • 1 tablespoon almond butter
  • 1 tablespoon medium chain triglycerides [MCT] oil
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • 1/4 cup cherries (fresh or frozen)
  • Handful of spinach 
  • 1 cup unsweetened nut milk
  • Cacao nibs

Directions:

  1. Place all ingredients in a high-speed blender and blend to desired consistency.  If you use fresh cherries, add a few ice cubes to cool. Top with Cacao nibs to taste.

      On the bag it would be “sweet” but just make sure they don’t have added sugar!
