Mean & Green. The Best Guy Out There

When I set out to write about avocados (you think I’m a geek, don’t you?) I thought – ‘well I know why avocados are fantastic, this will be easy’.  But like any good blog, we have to do our research and whoa nelly – we are about to UNLOAD on you.

Avocado_webThis is our third of the Magic Moments series.  If you are new to them, don’t fret.  Every week or so we highlight a food and tell you things that will help you see that food in a whole new light.  A light with extra sparkles and a fun tune.  A light that will, straight up , be giving you excuses to cook, eat and LOVE that food more than you could imagine.

Avocados have more potassium than a banana.  One avocado has – get ready – 975 mg of potassium!

They are one of the best sources of healthy fats.  Because of the fat content, avocados enable your body to more efficiently absorb fat-soluble nutrients (such as alpha- and beta-carotene and lutein) in other foods eaten in conjunction.

If you store your unripe avocados in a brown bag with an apple or a banana, the gases trapped in the bag will help those green guys ripen more speedily, according to The Haas Avocado Board.  Give them a friend and they’ll ripen, OR if you want to preserve them a bit longer, just pop them in the fridge and you’ll slow their ripening process.

You Don’t Have To Eat Them To Reap Their Benefits

  • There’s more to avocado than guacamole. Its oil is actually patented as a treatment for some forms of dermatitis and arthritis. According to Aubrey Hampton, author of Natural Organic Hair and Skin Care, long-term treatment with avocado oil helps relieve eczema. I’m not surprised, as avocado oil is rich in vitamins A, D and E, all of which help maintain healthy skin. I suggest applying it directly to any itchy, red or irritated areas.
  • Mashing an avocado and rubbing it into your hair for five minutes after washing will add luster to your hair; rinse afterwards.

Avocados have PROTEIN.  You didn’t know that — did you?  Yep, 4 grams.

Avocados are a fruit.  A berry to be specific.

Guacamole.  Need I say more?

Avocados are one of the safest fruits you can buy conventionally-grown. Most experts do not believe you need to purchase organic ones. Their thick skin protects the inner fruit from pesticides.

Avocados are PACKED with antioxidants.  In order to get the greatest concentration of antioxidants, you basically want to peel the avocado with your hands, as you would a banana:

1. First, cut the avocado length-wise, around the seed.
2. Holding each half, twist them in the opposite directions to separate them from the seed.
3. Remove the seed.
4. Cut each half, lengthwise.
5. Next, using your thumb and index finger, simply peel the skin off each piece.

Ok, now go grab an avocado and do something awesome with it!
